CHAPTER TEN

“You’ve grown fond of him very quickly,” Titus said, lifting another box up to Ryunosuke, who carried it deeper into the moving truck.

Egill nodded, stopping at Titus’s side to wait for Ryu and hand him the box he carried. “It’s been a fondness that’s been growing since I met him.”

Ryunosuke bent down to take the box from him. “But you didn’t talk to him since then.”

“That doesn’t mean I wasn’t growing fond of him in my thoughts.”

Titus leaned one shoulder against the edge of the truck’s opening. “You were growing fond of the idea of him.”

Egill set another box in the truck and faced him. “Maybe. But now I’m growing fond of the real him, which as it turns out, is much better.”

Ryunosuke stood at Titus’s shoulder. “I can see that. A hungry mouth and tight ass always feel better than your own hand.”

Egill fixed Ryunosuke with a less than amused look. “It’s more than that.”

“Right. And that’s why you’ve been fucking and feeding nonstop since you got here.”

“We’re catching up on lost time.”

Ryunosuke looked down at Titus. “I’m thinking he’s spent too much time alone during his self-imposed bachelorhood.”

Titus nodded. “I’d have to agree.”

Egill folded his arms across his chest. “I’ll admit, I’ve been a bit carried away these past few days, but…” He stopped, realizing he had nothing to follow that. He couldn’t defend his actions with Carl, how he’d wanted him for months and once he finally had him in sight, he couldn’t stop from touching him, tasting him, wanting to be inside him.

His usual guardedness was gone. He’d tried to hold it up against Carl, but the man broke it down with nothing more than his smile. It was hard to stay guarded against someone who put out nothing but kindness. And maybe that’s why he was drawn to Carl. The man was genuinely kind. He wasn’t self-serving. He sought to do good by everyone, whether they were human or animal.

A brief spell of humor passed through Egill. He could add vampire to that list now.

But to be around someone who was so honest, who cared for the world and everything in it, there was something very refreshing about that for him, who’d seen and lived through so much ugliness, who still dealt with it often in governing.

Ryunosuke clearing his throat brought Egill out of his thoughts. He took in both their expectant looks and grins. He snatched the box he’d set down and hoisted it toward Ryu. “This truck isn’t going to pack its damn self.”

Ryunosuke stayed in place beside Titus. “There he goes again, protesting too much.”

“I think this is a more an attempt at distraction,” Titus said. “But you’re right too, because he was about to protest a moment ago, then realized he’d run out of excuses.”

Egill jumped into the truck, carrying the box to stack with the others. “May the gods help our society when you’re both on the Tribunal.”

Ryunosuke shook his head. “The invitation hasn’t even been extended, and I
